Australian animals, or animals in cartoons, have been a source of amusement for generations, but a new documentary reveals the hard work and dedication required to draw animal figures on paper.
The documentary The Story of the World: Animal Stories by The Animal Hospital in Sydney, Australia, will air on ABC3 tonight at 7.30pm, and will also be available on the ABC iView.
“We know that animals are the most difficult to draw on paper,” Dr Fiona Leong said.
“I think people often get the impression that animals can’t draw anything.”
They’re very complex, they’re very difficult to do in terms of how you describe it and how you convey emotion.
“But we also know that when you look at a picture of an animal you can just imagine how it feels.”‘
It is the hardest thing I’ve ever done’A team of animators and illustrators created the cartoon series in 2013, and have been working to bring it to life ever since.
“The goal was to do something that would inspire and excite children and their parents, and that was the biggest challenge,” Dr Leong told news.com.au.
“It’s just the hardest things I’ve done.”
The team, which includes four animators, a graphic designer and two animators in the UK, also worked with a number of animatronics to get their drawings to look realistic.
The animators have worked for years on animal drawings, but their first real challenge was to get a character to move realistically.
“In our first series, we used a cat that was sitting on a stool,” Dr Leigh Leong, one of the animators working on the first series told news-com.uk.
“So you could see it wasn’t as realistic, but we knew it wasnt a bad idea to try it again.”
To make it more realistic, we made the cat move a little bit more, and then the animal moved.
“The first series also featured the main character, which had a head of feathers, and a tail.
Dr Leong says they had a number issues with the way the characters looked.”
One thing we didn’t do in our first cartoon was we used feathers and fur, so that wasns a big issue with how they looked, and also with how it was designed,” Dr Loh said.
It took months to complete the first cartoon series, but it was only when the team finally got to finishing the second series that it began to feel like they had their work cut out for them.”
You’ve got to give the animatronic the same respect as humans do when you work on the animals,” Dr Leah Leong added.
The project is being filmed at the Animal Hospital, in Sydney.”
There’s so much fun and learning involved in creating a cartoon,” Dr Anne Leong-Brown, the Animal Care and Management Manager at the hospital, said.
She said that the animator who helped create the characters in the first season had been working for years to improve their designs.”
When we first got in touch with the animatonist we wanted to thank him because it was his first experience working with an animal,” she said.
The Animals at the Hospital is a three-part documentary about the animals that live at the animal hospital, including the two animals featured in the series.”
These animals are real living creatures, and the work that they do every day is absolutely incredible,” Dr Jean-François Furet, the Head of Animal Care at the Animals at The Hospital, said in a statement.”
With a team of professional animators at our disposal, this series is the first of its kind to look at animals from an animal point of view.
